OVER 100 years in the making

Gunderson Marine has been building ships since 1941, operating from the Front Avenue site beginning in 1947.

Operating from the largest side-launch shipyard on the West Coast, Gunderson Marine is a deep-water facility, fully equipped for constructing all types of river and ocean-going barges. With up to 700 feet of capacity, the company is capable of producing large, ocean-going vessels and conventional deck barges for transporting aggregate, heavy equipment, and other industrial cargo. Gunderson Marine is the premiere West Coast shipyard for building large articulated tug barges and has also successfully completed deck barges, dump scows, oil spill recovery vessels, crane barges, and hopper barges. Gunderson Marine barges are compliant with the Jones Act, a law requiring any vessel that ships goods between U.S. ports to be manufactured in the United States.

Gunderson Marine operates a 58-acre industrial waterfront site in Portland, Oregon.

Gunderson Chairman, Terry Aarnio said, “We are proud of Gunderson Marine’s history and performance and are well-positioned to grow the marine business. We look forward to making investments in product development and infrastructure enhancements. We value innovation, customer service, and delivery of high-quality products.”

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

February 2019 marked the 100th anniversary of continuous operation at Gunderson, the flagship manufacturing plant in Portland, Oregon. What started out as a one-man operation has grown into a multi-billion dollar company with over 1,000 Oregon employees designing and building railcars and barges for global distribution.

Gunderson Fabrication has etched its name into the annals of American manufacturing history. Founded in 1919, our journey embarked on a humble note, patiently honing our craft year by year. The first barge rolled off our lines after 32 years of dedication, marking a monumental achievement. Our legacy in steel craftsmanship began early; in 1957, we proudly contributed steel parts to the iconic Morrison Bridge construction, a testament to our growing prowess.

In the realm of innovation, Gunderson has always been a trailblazer. We made history by pioneering the modern-day double-stack intermodal well car, revolutionizing the transportation of goods. This groundbreaking invention not only transformed industries but also solidified our reputation as innovators.

Our commitment to excellence has withstood the test of time. Even today, Gunderson stands tall, boasting the largest sideways launch on the West Coast, a symbol of our unwavering dedication to crafting the future.
